Facing the Cold Together This weekend, Northwest Houston is expecting extremely cold weather. While some may appreciate the change from our usually warm climate, it's important to remember that many in our community do not have the comfort of a warm home. For those experiencing homelessness, the cold, wet conditions are not just uncomfortable—they are life-threatening.

After nearly three decades as a commercial litigation attorney, Kathleen Spangler felt a pull toward something more. That eventually led her to Perkins School of Theology, where she will graduate in May. Spangler, a certified candidate for ordination as a deacon in the Texas Conference of The United Methodist Church, is serving her Perkins internship at Hope Center Houston, a faith-based day center for individuals experiencing homelessness. A couple of weeks ago, at about 4:00 AM, I woke to the sound of thunder and saw the flashes of lightning through the bedroom window. I have always loved thunderstorms at night. It is a chance to snuggle down in the bed and enjoy the sound of nature cleansing the land, breaking the heat, and replenishing the earth with much-needed water.

In May, Hope Center Houston faced the threat of closure due to a proposed state bill that would have devastated homeless service providers across Texas. Thanks to swift advocacy and a united community response, we stood our ground — but the fight isn’t over. Here’s what happened, why it matters, and how we move forward together.
